1 place to stay availableThe city was founded in 1898 by Ma al-'Aynayn in the territory then known as " Spanish West Africa, " which was later dissolved after the creation of "Spanish Sahara" on January 12, 1958, by merging the territories of Río de Oro and Saguia el-Hamra . In 1958, Smara was the site of Operation Huracan, a joint airborne operation conducted by the Spanish 1st Parachute Squadron and the French 7th Parachute Regiment (Operation Ecouvillon), aimed at dislodging the Moroccan Liberation Army from the south. That same year, Spain ceded the Tarfaya Strip to Morocco.
The city was also affected by the Western Sahara war between Morocco and the Polisario Front when the latter attacked the city of Es-Semara, triggering the Battle of Smara which ended in a victory for Morocco thanks to a force of 6,000 men.
